The Ideal Viscometer for Very Small Samples and other Demanding Viscosity Measurements

The EMS Viscometer is the perfect tool to perform a wide range of different viscosity measuring tasks – including very demanding ones – because it

  • can measure even the smallest sample quantities:
    • A very small sample volume of 0.3 mL is sufficient to do viscosity measurements and studies of the temperature, share rate and concentration dependency of the viscosity.
    • The measuring cell is closed. This safely prevents measuring errors due to evaporation of the sample.

    • It is suitable to measure samples with viscosities in the range of 0.1 … 1,000,000 mPa∙s.
    • In contrast to other Rotational and Capillary Viscometers where a suitable type of spindle or capillary must be selected according to the viscosity of the sample, the EMS Viscometer covers the whole measuring range with one single type of measuring cell.

  • is easy to operate and provides reliable results within a very short time:
    • A complete measuring cycle including sample preparation, temperature control and measurement (cleaning is not required) takes less than 5 minutes.
    • The measuring procedure is simple and straight forward: Fill the sample into the glass test tube – introduce the metal sphere – close the tube and insert it into the instrument – start the measurement.
  • does not require any cleaning after measurements:
    • The measuring cell is inexpensive and disposable.
    • The EMS Viscometer is the ideal solution to perform measurements of samples which are difficult or impossible to dissolve after measurement like products which tend to polymerize or adhesives.

The EMS Viscometer is the perfect tool to perform a wide range of different viscosity measuring tasks – including very demanding ones – because it

  • accurately controls the temperature of the sample during measurement:
    • The built-in solid state thermostat can cool and heat the sample and provides a quick and accurate temperature control during measurement – no external thermostat required.
    • The standard version of the instrument covers a temperature range of 0 … 200°C. On special request, the instrument can be equipped with a thermostat which allows measurements in a temperature range of either −10 … 50°C or 80 … 300°C.
    • Thanks to the sophisticated PC control software of the instrument, any kind of temperature ramp can be programmed. This allows easy and quick studies of the temperature dependency of the viscosity.
  • is capable of automatically performing rheological experiments:
    • The PC control software which comes with the instrument offers greatest flexibility to setup measuring cycles with freely definable measuring sequences with different temperatures and/or rotational speeds of the sphere.

    • Changes in the sample characteristics like coagulation or formation of precipitates can be detected during and after measurements.

Intuitive Sofware

The EMS Viscometer is operated and controlled on a personal computer. The corresponding Windows™ software comes with the instrument. It offers an intuitive user interface and the flexibility required to perform many different types of viscosity measurements and rheological experiments:

  • Single Measurement Mode:
    For viscosity measurements at fixed share rates and temperatures. Several sets of measuring conditions can be predefined and selected according to the type of sample to be measured.
  • Repeat Measurement Mode:
    To automatically perform n‑fold determinations of the viscosity.
  • Sequence Measurement Mode:
    In this mode measurement sequences can be defined. The Sequence Measurement Mode
    • allows the examination of changes in viscosity over time. This is useful for example to monitor viscosity changes during polymerization reactions.
    • offers the possibility to perform rheological experiments with freely definable temperature and/or share rate ramps.

The PC software visualizes the images captured by the built-in video camera. This allows to visually detect changes in the sample characteristics during measurements.

Highly Accurate Viscosity Measurements

The Electromagnetically Spinning Viscometer yields accurate viscosity values with an excellent repeatability as the following comparative test illustrates.

The graph on the right side show a comparison of the results yielded when measuring different viscosity standards with the following four types of viscometers:

The following three viscosity standards have been used in the tests:

  • JS10055.55mPa·s at 30°C
  • JS1000435.3mPa·s at 30°C
  • JS140004452mPa·s at 30°C

Every standard has been measured 5 times with each type of instrument. All the measurements have been performed at 30°C.

The graph shows a comparison of the relative standard deviations observed in the comparative test.
